What Sells

Where to sell antiques near Kennett Square, and what ours sold for

A dealer, an auction house, a consignment shop, online, or in-home consignment. How each one works, and what antiques and named pieces sold for this fall.

All selling guidesPublished November 1, 20264 min readBy Stone Ross

Old does not mean valuable, and a plain piece can still sell. What decides the price is who is searching for it. This guide covers the five places to sell an antique near Kennett Square and ten real sales from our record, each with its price and date.

Five places to sell an antique

An antique dealer or shop. A dealer pays on the spot and takes on the work of reselling. The offer sits below what the piece sells for, because the dealer needs a margin. Choose it for speed.

An auction house. Strong for a known maker, a documented history or real rarity. Ask about the seller's commission, any photography fee and when you get paid.

A consignment shop. The shop shows the piece and pays you after it sells. You get it there first. Ask what they accept and how long they keep it on the floor.

Online, on your own. eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Chairish reach buyers who search by maker and model. You take the photos, answer the messages and arrange delivery or shipping.

In-home consignment. This is our service. The piece stays in your house. We research what the same item actually sold for, photograph it, list it where its buyers look and handle the messages. Local buyers come to your door at a time you set.

What antiques sold for this fall

Each line is a recorded sale with its date. Our resale inventory means we owned the piece. Client consignment means we sold it for an owner. Prices are before costs and commission.

Antique oak five-drawer dresser, $75. Sold September 11, 2026. Our resale inventory.
Two-piece Queen Anne style highboy, $70. Sold September 15, 2026. Our resale inventory.
Hand-colored 1845 Herring engraving, Refraction, Winner of the Oaks, $40. Sold September 20, 2026. Our resale inventory.
Smith-Corona Super Sterling typewriter with its case, $65. Sold September 15, 2026. Our resale inventory.
Marquetry side table, $100. Sold September 29, 2026. Client consignment.

Plain old furniture sells to neighbors at neighbor prices. That is still money, and it is still space back in the house.

The name brings the price

The pieces that brought real money had a maker, a signature or a following of people who search for that exact thing.

Andrew Wyeth, Olson's House, signed 169/300. Sold for $1,500 on September 27, 2026.

Andrew Wyeth, Olson's House, signed and numbered 169/300, $1,500. Sold September 27, 2026. Our resale inventory.
JBL 4311 studio monitor speakers, walnut pair, $800. Sold October 6, 2026. Client consignment.
Nikon F2 Photomic film camera with a Nikkor zoom, $229. Sold September 20, 2026. Client consignment.
Studio-made jewelry chest in bird's-eye maple, $225. Sold September 29, 2026. Client consignment.
Stickley Prairie mantel clock in cherry, $210. Sold September 20, 2026. Client consignment.

JBL 4311 speakers, walnut pair. Sold for $800 on October 6, 2026.

None of those is very old. Each one has buyers who type its name into a search box. See more on selling art and signed prints, cameras and furniture, or every piece in what we have sold.

Check five things before you call anyone

A maker's label, stamp or paper tag inside a drawer or under the seat.
A signature and an edition number in the margin of a print.
Model numbers on cameras, speakers and instruments.
Original boxes, cases and papers. Keep them with the piece.
Visible damage. Photograph it and leave the repair for later.

Which route fits

For speed, a dealer. For a rare piece with a documented history, an auction house. For a few good pieces and some patience, consignment.

When the pieces are worth selling but too heavy or too many to haul to a shop, in-home consignment keeps them where they stand until a buyer comes. We work about 30 miles around Kennett Square, including West Chester, Chadds Ford, Media, Wilmington and Hockessin.

Send us photos of the label, the whole piece and any damage. Or call or text (484) 873-8483.
